What we say: Craig Green and adidas have switched to the ZX 2k Boost this season, giving the model an improved version endorsed by Craig Green. The duo transformed the Boost-equipped sneaker into two new versions, dubbed ZX 2k Phormar and ZX 2k Phormar 2.
Both models are built using as few individual parts as possible and are aesthetically in line with previous Green and adidas collaborations. The shoe was first unveiled as a prototype during Craig Green’s FW20 runway show and represents the latest evolution of Green’s work with adidas.
“I wanted to explore a new way of building a shoe. We took inspiration from the functional simplicity of the ZX 2K Boost and created a shoe where every detail of design is driven by function, ”says Green. “The outer shell of each PHORMAR is made from a single piece of fabric. We used high density cords, which are passed through channels sewn into the fabric, these exposed cords can be used as handles to tighten the shape of the upper, so that the shoes can be ergonomically designed around your foot.
This collection – which sees the Phormar arriving in royal blue and white and the Phormar 2 arriving in beige, black and white – represents a change in color palette from previous Green collections.
“I’m always interested in the tensions and contrast between light and dark, something I often explore throughout my work,” says Green. “The first collection we created with adidas was full of bright, bright colors. I wanted to explore another aspect of my work with this collection, and I worked with earth tones as well as monochromatics.
Green’s adidas collaborations have always walked a tightrope between vintage – often working on iconic silhouettes from the past – and a very futuristic aesthetic. The Phormar and the Phormar 2 are no different.
“I love how the end result is both futuristic and minimal too. I still think the simple and functional construction details are beautiful, ”says Green. “With this shoe, the reason for its shape is due to the cords and sewn channels. Each element serves a functional and aesthetic purpose. “
The Craig Green x adidas ZX 2k Phormor Collection will be released on May 11.
